FAQs

General

A:

We recognize the importance of gathering and meeting other T1D families, but the health and safety of our Walkers, volunteers and staff is our top priority.

Given the type 1 diabetes (T1D) community is at higher risk for severe illness if they contract COVID-19, we want to ensure we create a safe, inclusive environment for everyone. Therefore, we strongly recommend all those in attendance at Walks be fully vaccinated and when indoors, or in close quarters with others, wear a mask. As health and safety protocols are continuously being updated*, please watch for an email update closer to Walk Month for confirmation of event details.

*COVID-19 protocols may vary by location. We ask that you always follow and respect the measures a specific Walk location has in place. If you have questions about the protocols in place for the Walk you are attending please contact your Walk Support Team at walk@jdrf.ca or via phone at 1.877.505.5373

This year we are excited to be re-uniting our T1D communities in-person through a cautious and phased approach, as we are still facing challenges from COVID-19. The health and safety of our participants is our number one priority. We are excited to celebrate Walk Month this June with two ways to participate in the Walk:

  • Join us at one of our six signature Walks on Sunday, June 12th, or a Walk in your community anytime in June. Participants can connect with each other, celebrate fundraising achievements and take their steps that count together. To learn more about the Walk in your community, CLICK HERE

  • Or, choose to Walk Your Way and participate in the Walk anytime, anywhere and any way you like.

A: We are excited to be re-uniting our T1D communities in-person through a cautious and phased approach, as we are still facing challenges from COVID-19. The health and safety of our participants is our number one priority. Though many walks across the country will be hosted in-person with the support of JDRF staff and our dedicated and passionate volunteer leaders, not all Walks that were previously hosted across the country will return this year. We encourage you to visit of Location page to learn more about the options to walk with us in person or to Walk Your Way in support of JDRF this year. Reach out to our Walk Support Team at walk@jdrf.ca or via phone at 1.877.505.5373.
A: Understanding that the comfort level of people to gather may differ from person to person, and community to community, JDRF is taking a cautious approach to holding in-person events. Depending on your community, and depending on your comfort level, you may be able to participate either at an in-person Walk and take your final steps that count together, or join us to Walk Your Way and participate anytime, anywhere and in any way that you choose.
A: A Signature Walk is supported primarily by JDRF staff and a group of dedicated event day volunteers. In 2022, Signature Walks are scheduled to take place in Vancouver, Edmonton, Regina, Toronto, Montreal and Halifax on June 12, Walk Day.
A: A Community Walk is a Walk supported primarily by our amazing and dedicated volunteer leaderships committees from across the country. As many Walks this year will be community Walks, you may have a different Walk Day experience than in 2019 or previous years but you will still take your final steps that count together with your T1D community.
A: If you don’t see a Walk in your community or want to fundraise in your own way, you can register to Walk Your Way in your own province or territory. Register, fundraise and participate in the Walk anytime, anywhere and in any way: the choice is yours, and every step you take is a step closer to the cure. Have further questions? Reach out to our Walk Support Team at walk@jdrf.ca or via phone at 1.877.505.5373.
A: JDRF’s mission has always been to dedicate as much to research as possible. In evaluating in-person Walk sites from previous years in 2022, we selected six sites across the country to represent our diverse T1D community and to also help support keeping our costs low and prioritizing dedicating funds to research. This year, we have partnered with our dedicated and passionate volunteer base across the country to help us to reach as many communities as possible, returning to the grassroots foundation of JDRF, and also helping to keep costs low.
A: No problem. Please reach out to our Walk Support Team at walk@jdrf.ca or via phone at 1.877.505.5373 for assistance.

Signature Walks

In late 2021, we surveyed our Walk participants to find out what the most important elements of the Walk were to them. The response was unanimous: Walkers wanted to be able to gather as a T1D community in-person. With that in mind, with JDRF’s cautious and phased approach to returning to in-person events amidst the pandemic, we made the decision to select six Signature Walk sites across the country to reflect our diverse community from coast to coast. We also reached out to our dedicated and passionate volunteer groups to help support the organizing and execution of Community Walks across the country so that the T1D community can continue to gather and unite.

If a Walk is not listed in your community but you are interested in learning more about stepping up to volunteer for your community, please connect with us at volunteers@jdrf.ca.

A: That’s great! CLICK HERE to sign up, learn more about volunteer opportunities and be connected to a member of our Volunteer & Community Engagement Team.

When you reach out to family and friends to support your fundraising efforts, being sensitive to what other people are feeling or experiencing right now is important. Share your personal T1D experience, so people understand why this is so important to you. Emphasize the need for donations to keep research moving forward and encourage people to give what they can. Even a small amount can add up to a big difference.

A:

Yes! Our online system is a secure site and fundraising online is the most cost-effective way to raise money in support of the Walk.

A: Fundraising rewards for the Walk are entirely paperless this year. To maximize your fundraising rewards, please ensure all pledges have been submitted to JDRF by July 29, 2022. After your donations have been processed, you will receive an email with instructions on how to redeem your e-gift card this fall. To learn more about fundraising rewards, CLICK HERE.
A:

Team fundraising efforts will automatically be included in the Team Captain's fundraising totals when calculating the qualifying amount for e-gift cards. For example, if a Team Captain raises $250, a Team Member raises $125, and the Team receives an additional $500 in donations, the Team Captain will receive fundraising rewards for $750 ($250 + $500) and the Team Member will receive rewards for $125.

A:

JDRF pays for all fundraising rewards but negotiates discounts nationally on purchased prizes. To help JDRF direct more funds to research, participants can donate their rewards back to the organization.

A:

Thank you for your outstanding fundraising! Individuals are awarded a maximum of $500 in e-gift cards.

A:

Absolutely. You are welcome to share your fundraising rewards with your team if you wish.
